Viscosity Experiment

by Pam Collinge

February 10, 2009

Science students designed an experiment to test the viscosity of five different liquids. Viscosity is a substance’s ability to resist flowing. The liquids that were tested were water, vinegar, oil, starch, syrup, Milk of Magnesia, starch and glue. Students predicted that the denser substances would have a higher viscosity. Results supported their hypothesis. Students charted and graphed results to include in lab reports. Watch the following video to see the procedure that was used by the group. When students were asked to collaborate and design their own experiments, they found that the procedure was the hardest part to write. It took some trial and error and problem solving to figure out which procedure would lead to the results that would answer the question.
