CHEMISTRY CLASSES TOUR SALT MINES
by Sam Wine
March 04, 2008
On Wednesday, January 9th, the Junior Chemistry Class had to set their alarms early to prepare for a death defying trip below the ground. The class, instructed by Mr. Wine, traveled to Hutchinson, and plunged 650 feet into the historic salt mine. There they received a tour over the history and development of the mine.
Besides the history and chemistry they learned, there was the treat of viewing several Hollywood artifacts and documents. At 650 feet underground and surrounded by the water absorbing salt, artifacts can be preserved under the optimal low moisture condition. Thousands of old documents, old films, and movie props have been preserved in this mine. Items displayed were the Batman costume worn by George , the Dorothy tornado probe from the movie "Twister" and the Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeves.
Upon returning to the surface, with their pockets weighted with complimentary salt samples, the students emerged knowing what wonders lay right under their feet.
