Enhancing Life Skills

September 01, 2023

Often one hears about students not obtaining 'real life skills' they need in order to be successful once they graduate high school; however, at EJSHS we strive to prepare students to be successful in all areas once they graduate. Students are obtaining skills on a daily basis from punctuality, being held responsible for their actions, advocating for their needs, personal hygiene, and even cooking to name a few. As a teacher myself, I love hearing about students getting involved in their school community and their home community. This week, some students had the opportunity to learn about recipes, how to read recipes, why recipes are important, and then in return they practiced the skill themselves by making smoothies. In this particular lesson, the students learned that some recipes are successful, while others are not as good. Before and after the students made predictions, answered questions, worked with other students and staff to create delicious smoothies! Some special teachers received smoothies as a THANK YOU for all they have done in the student's life. My closing thought is, consider and reflect on the ways students are growing, not always on what students are not learning- you might be surprised by all the great things happening within the school community.
