Course Descriptions: At-A-Glance

 

Career & Life Planning (8th Grade) 1 Semester

Planning for your future career path, educational training and life goals can make a difference between “going down the tubes” or “up the ladder.”  This class will create a personal portfolio, an authentic interview, analyzing credit card applications, and a checking account simulation.  

Family Studies (9th-12th Grades) 1 Semester

This class will train you for life’s most important work…parenthood.  What are the roles and responsibilities of being a parent?  How do various family structures and cultures affect parenting?  Balancing work and children’s needs are a huge struggle for today’s society.  We will investigate day cares vs. staying at home, money costs, and other resources of raising a child.

Child Development (9th-12th Grades) 1 Year

How valuable is a child’s life?  This class includes an in-depth discovery of the development from conception to age six.  Windows of learning and dimensions of development are experienced at all major milestones of development.  At the end of the year, the class will conduct preschool sessions and volunteer at Head Start.  This class is aligned in preparation for Butler County Community College’s early childhood education program.  REQUIRED CURRENT PHYSICAL AND TB TEST FROM GW CO HEALTH DEPT OR MEDICAL DOCTOR.

Foundations of Early Childhood (10th-12th Grades) 1 Semester

Set the ground work for volunteering in a early childhood education program.  Students will develop curriculum for children, learn how to communicate with families, and create positive relationships with children.  REQUIRED CURRENT PHYSICAL AND TB TEST FROM GW CO HEALTH DEPT OR MEDICAL DOCTOR.

Early Childhood Applications (10th-12th Grade)  1 Year

After completing the approved sequence for Early Childhood Education, students will be placed in a local early childhood education program.  Students will implement childcare procedures, strategies, and effective practices.  REQUIRED CURRENT PHYSICAL AND TB TEST FROM GW CO HEALTH DEPT OR MEDICAL DOCTOR.

Nutrition & Wellness (9th-12th grades)

This is a wellness class that takes an intense look at nutrition, the food guide pyramid, reading food labels, special diets, sports nutrition, and substance abuse (alcohol, drug and tobacco use).  It will promote making healthy decisions to make you fit in for life.  This class includes a dietary analysis, caffeine taste test, and tasting labs.

Food Service (9th-12th grades)

Ever thought about being a master of the kitchen?  This introductory course introduces culinary skills and techniques to prepare for the cookery industry. We will practice and investigate sanitation, develop a recipe book from the semester’s investigations, and provide a food service project for the community.

School-to-Career STC (11th-12th grades)

Experience how to increase job skills in the real world.  Work with an employer within the community related to the career pathway you are interested in pursuing.  Maximum 3 hours, must take career & life planning II with this class.

Prerequisite:  Career & Life Planning I, Teacher Permission, concurrent enrollment in Career & Life Planning II

Marshall Tutor (9th-12th grades)

Interested in teaching?  Or working with young children?  This class allows you to assist in a classroom at the elementary school everyday.  Will be placed by the teacher.
