Full Steam Ahead in September
Now that we are well into September, second grade students are working on a normal class work schedule. This can sometimes feel a little overwhelming in the beginning as students get accustomed to a new grade level. A steady routine is one thing that helps students adjust well to a new school year.
As you have noticed students have regular homework assignments for reading. These word practice pages are not only part of our reading fluency program but they are also part of the second grade W.I.G. The second grade W.I.G. (wildly important goal), is to have 80% or higher of students complete their reading homework. If one of our classes reaches the goal for the month then they get to move their class camper on to the next Happy Reader Campsite on our bulletin board. At the end of each quarter, the 2nd grade classes that have met each weekly goal 80% of the time will be rewarded.
Reading is a crucial life skill which is improved upon by practice! The improvement of all students’ reading skills is also our building wide goal here at Marshall. Each month the individual grade levels will graph the percentage of their students who met their grade’s W.I.G. The goal again is 80% or higher for each grade to meet their grade level W.I.G.
