Chemistry Update

February 13, 2024

The chemistry classes have been investigating how and why compounds form as well as how we count particles that are too small to see. We have been looking at the ratios in which the compounds combine and how the masses of the atoms change as they combine. By using the masses of the elements in a sample, we can determine what the formula of the compound is. The students have been relating the masses of the provided elements and determining how many moles (a counting number like a dozen) of the element are present. This can allow us to relate the masses and number of particles of any particular compound.

We have also been describing substances by looking at pure substances and mixtures to determine the properties of elements, compounds, and different types of mixtures. During this discussion, we compared solutions, colloids, suspensions, and alloys by looking at their properties and bronzing pennies. Overall, the chemistry classes have been moving from larger scale to smaller and we are working at the atomic and molecular scale now so we can move into chemical reactions soon.
