"I Love Saturdays y Domingos"

Third-Year Spanish Students Read to Marshall Elementary Kids

February 14, 2024

Each year, Marshall Elementary third grade students experience a bilingual reading section that exposes them to passages written mainly in English and containing words and small phrases in a target language (any non-native language that is the objective).  Marshall teacher Shelby Miller has been coordinating with EJSHS Spanish teacher Calisa Hall since 2020 to provide a unique opportunity for high school Spanish students to read to Marshall third graders.  This coming Monday, February 19, four students will accompany Señora Hall to Marshall to read the story “I Love Saturdays y Domingos” to students.  All four students are juniors and have nearly completed their third year of Spanish study.  They are: Taylor Campbell, Cody Johnson, Kimber Ptacek, and Aven Sanchez.

This unique opportunity allows the Spanish students to practice their target language pronunciation and inflection.  It also provides an opportunity for them to demonstrate their presentational communication skills.  More importantly, this experience fosters an opportunity for connection among our district students.  It allows young kids to witness older kids in action, provides opportunities for them to set internal communication goals, and allows them to witness a collaborative effort among the high school group.  Finally, this is a wonderful school service opportunity for high school students to document in their Senior Exit Project.  Señora Hall looks forward to years of continuing collaboration with Marshall teachers and their students.
