First Grade Happenings in January

January 19, 2026

First we would like to remind you all that the weather has turned cold!!! BRR!!!

January has gotten cold, so please be sure to send your children with coats, gloves and hats. Our recess begins at 10:20am so most days throughout the winter it is very cold.  We have been lucky this winter. :)

Onto the Happenings within the classroom:

Phonics: We are currently working on Closed and open two-syllable words. Students have learned to whale talk these two syllable words and hand stomp them to figure out how many syllables they have. We have worked on one, two and three syllable words.

This week in Reading we will be working on Closed and Open syllables and previewing blends at the beginning and ending of the word, we will be reading the story Twist and Stomp in our reading book along with the activities.

We have had the fun task of measuring items with our math curriculum this month. We are using centimeter cubes to measure, and have used non standard items to measure as well, for example, our hand, feet, string etc. Students have been enjoying measuring items during our math time.

Social Studies we will be learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks

We are also looking forward to our 101st day of school. Students will be encouraged to complete some activities at home for this so notes will be coming home soon. Thank you for ALL you do with your children. We enjoy teaching them.
