STEM in the Library using Biographies
May 06, 2026
Do you know what engineering marvel was introduced at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago? If you said the Ferris Wheel, created by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., you are correct! Recently, 6th graders listened to a biography about Ferris and the ride he created for the 1893 World’s Fair. The next week, with a partner, they created a model Ferris Wheel using only wheel cutouts, hole punch, popsicle sticks, straws, tape, and scissors. It had to be designed so that the wheel could spin around an axle and stand on its own. The groups only had 20 minutes to complete the project. The Ferris Wheels are currently on display in the elementary library.
