7th and 8th Grade Science
September 29, 2020
7th Grade
Students started the year reviewing the three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas. They completed numerous experiments working with the 3 states of matter. One term that we are going to explore further is sublimation. Sublimation is when a solid turns directly into a gas. We watched a video showing dry ice changing into a vapor, but we hope to have that experience in class during the month of October. Recently, students have been learning about the Periodic Table of elements. You will be able to see their Periodic Table license plates on display outside the classroom during parent teacher conferences.
8th grade
Students started the year learning about waves. They did labs to discover how sound travels including using a slinky, telephone cans, and hitting a hanger against items. The hanger experiment was the favorite for the sound wave labs! For visible light students learned that all colors of light together equal white light. They did an experiment with light by shining
g all the colors separately and then combining them and it created white light. Students also used prisms outside to create "rainbows" and completed several other light activities.
8th grade students will participate in the Science Fair this year. Science fair links can be found on the USD #389 homepage under the tab Science Fair. All students have selected their topics and will begin working on their research and plan soon.
