From Caterpillar to Butterflies

Thanks to donations from a Donor's Choose project, Mrs. Burden's 7th and 8th grade science classes were able to watch caterpillars grow and change into butterflies. Each class period had their own butterfly pavilion with two different sections of caterpillars per class. Students kept notebooks with observations of daily changes including size, color, and when they began metamorphosis. 7th grade students also completed research over butterflies in Kansas and colored a butterfly to look like the one they choose. Students were surprised with how fast the change happened and enjoyed observing each stage. Thankfully they emerged just in time for our last burst of warm weather. The students released around 45 pink lady butterflies on Monday, November 7th during 8th hour.
