Off to A Great start in 2nd Grade!

September 09, 2025

Second graders are off to a great start!  We have had a wonderful start to the school year and are so happy to share our days with your amazing kids!

We use the Really Great Reading program to teach phonics and spelling. Each week we will have a new list of spelling words and Heart words for the students to study. Heart word checks are at the end of each quarter. Spelling tests with dictation sentences are given at the end of every week.

Our reading blocks consist of multiple components. The first 30 mins. consists of reading comprehension and vocabulary lessons. In the next block, we practice words, phrases, and sentences that aid the students in the fluency of their weekly All About Reading story. The final block is small group rotations. During these rotations students will be rereading for fluency with a para, doing a mini lesson with the teacher, and working on Lexia or A.R.

In math, we completed and tested over graphing. Now we are currently working on metric measurement. We have also sent home math fact cards to improve fluency, this will help students with their sprints and classwork.

Informational writing is our current writing skill. We will be practicing all month. Then in October we will write our final paper.

We are working on t Geography in social studies. Students are learning what makes a community, the three types of communities, how to use a map, and what is geography.

We are very excited about the many things we have planned in 2nd grade this year.  We look forward to getting to know you and your family.
