Research Based Practices for Spelling

September 23, 2025

Research suggests that students learn best when they are systematically and explicitly taught the rules for spelling. Student spelling lists follow the rules and patterns taught each week in the Really Great Reading phonics curriculum. Students learn when and how to use the correct sound spelling correspondence when writing words.

Several strategies (listed below) are used when segmenting and blending sounds to read and write words.

Spelling supports reading in many ways:

  • Builds strong word representations
  • Develops sight word knowledge
  • Promotes reading fluency
  • Enhances vocabulary
